On behalf of the Headmaster Search Committee and the Board of Trustees, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Hartwell Heath Roper, Jr. (Hart) as the next headmaster of Memphis University School, beginning in July 2027.

Headmaster Search
Headmaster Pete Sanders announced January 14, 2026, that he would retire at the end of the 2026-27 school year. A seasoned educator and administrator with over 40 years of experience at independent schools, Sanders joined MUS in 2017 and, upon retirement, will have served the school with distinction for a decade.
To oversee the transition process, Board Chair Will Thompson ’95 appointed a Headmaster Search Committee comprising 10 members and named Trustee Margaret McLean as chair.
The committee selected Carney, Sandoe & Associates, an executive search firm specializing in independent schools, to lead the search. See the Headmaster Position Description.
