Civic Service Organization
A student's responsibility to the community is a priority at MUS. Students here are given much: an excellent education, strong support, a chance for growth, and opportunities to realize their potential. We expect them to give something back to their school and to the community that nurtures and supports them.
Through the Civic Service Organization, Owls participate in a variety of community service projects each school year. Although there is not a requirement for service, about 90 percent of our students lend a hand through CSO events.
Regularly scheduled volunteer projects include campus Mid-South Food Bank grocery distributions, MIFA Meals on Wheels lunch delivery, Balmoral-Ridgeway Elementary School tutoring, Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church More Than A Meal program, and Salvation Army Purdue Center of Hope cookouts. In addition, the CSO holds about a dozen events each semester for Special Olympics, Salvation Army Angel Tree project, Red Zone Ministries, Binghampton Christian Academy, and other organizations.
Through the annual Day of Service in September, about half our students volunteer at up to 18 locations across the city.
Societas Caritatis Honor Society
During the 2008-09 school year, the executives of the CSO created the organization's honor society. Societas Caritatis, meaning Society of Charity, recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding charitable leadership and service to the local community. The CSO established the requirements for membership, and the group’s executive board selects the qualifying students each year.
Through their involvement, the boys at MUS learn important lessons about people in need, about problem solving, about leadership, and about working together.
